Consequence - withdrawal of the GWR trains to Brighton

I'll just quote this public exchange ...

Why has the 7:43 fast train from chichester to brighton stopped? The only fast train on this line and now gone. I hope there is a good reason for this

[name] this was a DfT^» (Department for Transport - about) directive to reduce duplication of services, it also enables GWR^▸ (Great Western Railway) to add more carriages to busier services on other parts of their network, particularly the Cardiff/Bristol to Portsmouth route.

[name] I get that. Just now means there are now only 2 very slow and busy trains between portsmouth and brighton now peak time. Which is more a southern issue than gwr

I would suggest it's more of a timing issue than a speed issue as the difference between the 'fast' train that used to run and the 'very slow' trains that now run is fairly small - 59 or 56 minutes now, with the 'fast' train previously taking 52 minutes.

The 'fast' train used to provide an arrival in Brighton at 08:35 - plum for the traditional commute - current arrivals at 08:04 and 08:55 leave quite a yawning gap.
