"Do not travel" warning in Scotland.

I suspect that we are seeing the consequences of the fatal accident at Stonehaven. There was considerable criticism of the railway after that, and a criminal conviction.
A reasonably foreseeable consequence is a much more cautious approach in future, with services suspended when bad weather is forecast.

I wonder if as a result, "The railway" will become OVER cautious and adopt a policy of "if in doubt close down" I have previously remarked that we have a fair weather only railway, and this seems to be worsening.
Most roads and most airlines will probably operate as normal.

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards,luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU^▸ is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

Hmm...

I think this is a case of "any bad news about railways is good news headlines". If you read the article, the Scottish Police are advising against all non-essential travel, and when you see the predicted amounts (up to 7 inches) this is hardly surprising.

Think back to 31 May 2019, when much less rain flooded the underpass at Didcot. There's also pictures already of track at Bowling Station entirely under water on the BBC^» website.

The difference in weather today in Scotland compared with the southern half of England is pretty amazing. Definitely a day to stay indoors if you’re in the wrong half!

There is a chance that the records for the UK^▸ highest maximum and lowest maximum recorded temperatures on a calendar day could be both broken either today or tomorrow and that won't have happened that often. Although the warm temperatures in the south are forecast to peak a bit lower than they were a couple of days ago.
