Rail and beauty enthusiasts can take in one of the most scenic trainlines in the country for just £3.

The St Ives to St Erth route trundles through an exceptional and breath-taking bit of British countryside. There is really no better way to see this particular stretch of the UK^▸ (United Kingdom) than from the comfortable seat of a train as you make your merry way towards a day out at the seaside.

Maybe a more useful point to make would be that you only have to travel from as far away as Truro for that bit of the journey to be free, in as much as it is the same fare from Truro and points further east to both St Erth and St Ives.

Anecdote not data, when down in the far south west out of season, on two occasions I met people who'd used the South Western train to Cornwall to come down for a break. Both times from Woking, and having seen Graham's photos from Woking from the other night, I'm not surprised.

Woking was not at its best on Wednesday evening ... but then anywhere would have struggled be attractive in a howling gale, rain pouring down, leaves flying everywhere.  Non-working display screens with even the text to say it wasn't working only partially showing, and a long walk back to the car, with a work site blocking the way out of the car park marked on the road, did not help the impression.   And had I been of a nervous disposition, I might have found it rather challenging.
