Westbury or Uffington? They are separate horses.

The Uffington White Horse used to be in Berkshire.  Then in 1974 it was moved to Oxfordshire in a deal which saw Berkshire gain Slough.

They were robbed!  White horse is far better than Slough!

They also lost the ancient county town of Berkshire, which is Abingdon.

As a resident of North Berkshire in 1974 I find it strange that I didn't feel any earth tremors from the movement.

In some sense, however it is still in Berkshire since in my passport it says I was born in Berkshire.  The rules state that if the a changed county then the county should be stated as it was when the person was born!

It all gets very complex
* The Wilts and Berks canal
* The Berks and Hants railway
* Portsmouth Arms
* Barry Link

The only one affected by the change as I see it was the Wilts & Berks Canal - except that it officially closed 60 years before the change.  The Berks and Hants Railway was not, as far as I can tell affected by any boundary chnages.  I will need to have the significance of the otehr two explained to me.

I was and am aware of Westbury's White Horse being repainted. I work for Westbury Town Council, and a committee that I clerk has been the driving force in badgering English Heritage to get it done - a lengthy process, and probably including some laundry that's not best aired on a public forum. I might just add that Westbury White Horse itself is owned by English Heritage and the land it stands on lies just across the border in a small neighbouring parish, so the whole thing is therefore technically none of our business, although try explaining that to the town's residents and I guarantee few will understand and still fewer have any sympathy...

The Westbury White Horse and the earthworks of Bratton Castle Iron Age hill fort are both in Bratton parish.

To quote you, Phil ...

Perhaps I am one of the few ... though I am not one of Westbury's residents.
