A Spanish warship, turning up at Great Yarmouth and firing cannon?  Drake's drum would have been beating, games of bowls at Plymouth would have been curtailed, and there'd have been a rush up the English Channel to deal with the matter.  Grin

William Huskisson MP▸ (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

Working with a lot of Spanish Nationals,and they always referred to Sir Francis Drake as a pirate,

and Brits call him an explorer/adventurer.

Many decades ago at school, the specialist subject was the (first) Elizabethan age and it was not appreciated when I suggested in an essay that Drake, Raleigh and others were pirates.

I wonder why the Spanish didn't like him?  Smiley

They actually referred to him as "The Dragon"

One of the very finest Devonians who now gazes out over Plymouth Sound from The Hoe.
