This got me thinking.

These toilets were originally gents, but they have been reconfigured into ladies, as the demand for extra ladies toilets is greater (you just have to look at the queues for the ladies).

In my youthful commuting (circa 1962 to 1976, South East London and North West Kent) the majority of passengers, thinking back, were working aged males.  In my senior railcard days, I'm noting a change to the extent that there are often (usually?) more females than males, and a much wider distribution of age - a higher proportion of children and fare more people who are I would evaluate to being probably retired.     

How much of the change relates to a very different line and travel pattern, and how much to a changing age, I don't know.  I do note that rail passenger numbers more than doubled from 750 million journeys a year to 1750 million journeys, and wonder if that increase was proportionate to the existing use base profile, or to the general population user base profile, or something else?

Do any of the many 'passenger surveys' capture any of that statistical information?  Undecided

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

New facilities are often unisex cubicles now, so that those who identify as a different gender to their ‘assigned at birth’ gender aren’t forced to compromise or risk offending others.
