It's a little known fact that, not so long ago, the "original" FGW (First Great Western), I think uniquely amongst the franchised operators, had a safety case that would have allowed it to operate its own charter trains as well as scheduled services. I think it was very little used, if at all, and was allowed to lapse. As an aside, I think aspect f paperwork is where the summer 2007 Weymouth loco-hauled services fell down: they were being operated on EWS (English Welsh & Scottish Railway Ltd, now known as DB Schenker Rail (UK (United Kingdom)))'s safety case but that only covered chartered passenger charter trains rather than scheduled ones.

NR» (Network Rail - home page) also likes a diesel on the back to push the loco if it runs short of steam or otherwise fails on route.

Does anybody know why Oliver Cromwell didn't have a diesel in tow yesterday?

The accompanying diesel is not always attached to the train itself: there may have been a light engine running shadowing the train a section or two behind.
