I find the Train Search app, which has a Cross Country badge but shows all UK^▸ (United Kingdom) trains, pretty useful.

And it's free!

Interesting! But which app is it that you mean? I have the expensive National Rail one which allows journey planning as well as live running (my main use of the app), but doesn't give me a timetable page. Neither does the XC^▸ (Cross Country Trains (franchise)) one, nor the rubbish Train Line one. There is an expensive (^90 pa ?) subscription timetable available for Windows computers (not sure if there is a version for Windows phones) which is good as it allows you to select specific TOCs^▸ (Train Operating Company) and is updated monthly. However they don't do a Mac version, nor an iPhone app.

Bought it to try it!

It seems to be a copy of the timetable pages, maps, symbols etc. In fact everything you can view of Network Rail's current / future timetable download from their website.

When you have selected your timetable -I tried 135 (Paddington to Penzance) and you get a PDF of the timetable. However at full portrait screen on the iPad it is too small and blurred to read. So stretch it, but then you loose the stations on the left, or trains on the right, plus head codes at the top of the column. Tried turning iPad into landscape mode, but it won't.

Therefore, I am more inclined to try to save Network Rail's PDFs onto my iPad, cause, if I can do it (it is quite large and I haven't figured out to save it rather than download every time) it is free and perhaps more useful.

My advice is keep your ^2:39 and put it towards a can od diet coke!

I went to Networkrail.co.uk > then forthcoming timetable and downloaded "the complete timetable", which is all the printed pages of timetables. However this is a zipped file.  When you have got this on your iPad you need to save it. You will need something like "filer lite" (free app) to open it and save it. Filer lite allows me to save the PDF timetable in a number of other locations including HP iPrint and Print Central (both paid for apps), but also to save the timetable in iBooks.

Now it is in my iBooks Library and is easily readable without stretching. Only snag is that the timetable has 3k plus pages so you need to find the relevant pages and then bookmark them for future use.

More complicated than the app but much better once you have downloaded the timetables. No reason why you couldn't download FGW^▸ (First Great Western)'s timetable booklets either and keep them in your iBooks library.
