The steam train enthusiasts who operate Peak Rail in Derbyshire have been given permission to run their trains into Matlock station.

Work will start within a few weeks to install the track so the trains can run into the station by next spring.

Peak Rail has been trying to get permission to extend its service from Rowsley for several years.

Network Rail has given Peak Rail the go-ahead to extend its service by about a mile necessary to reach Matlock.

The 20-mile stretch (32km) of railway between Matlock and Buxton through the Peak National Park was closed in 1968.

It was formerly part of the Midland Railway line between Manchester Central and London St Pancras.

At present, Peak Rail plc runs passenger services, powered by both steam and diesel trains, on a 3.7-mile (6km) line between Matlock Riverside and Rowsley.

William Huskisson MP▸ (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.
