I have a friend travelling from Blackwater to Swindon on Monday, then onto Birmingham returning on Tuesday.

I proposed the following fares but can anyone think of a better one:

BAW - BAN (SVR):^24.70 - what's the SOR for this route?
BAN - BHM (SVR):^15.20
DID▸ (Didcot Parkway) - SWI» (Swindon - next trains) (CDR▸ (Off Peak Day Return [ticket type] (formerly 'Cheap Day'))):^8.90

TOTAL: ^48.80

It appears you've got those fares from NFM▸ (National Fares Manual) 07. We are now on NFM 08 following the inflation busting price rises in January.

Blackwater - Banbury (SVR) ^26.50
Banbury -Birmingham NS ^16.50
Didcot - Swindon CDR▸ (Off Peak Day Return [ticket type] (formerly 'Cheap Day')) ^9.40

Total: ^52.40

Aside from that I think you've got the best possible combination if your friend can start their journey after 0930. You asked whether there is a SOR for Blackwater to Banbury. Sadly not. If your friend needs an earlier AM start toward Swindon then the best option would be an SDS Blackwater - Banbury at ^24.30 and a CDS▸ (Off Peak Day Single [ticket type] (formerly 'Cheap Day')) Banbury to Blackwater at ^13.70 in place of the Blackwater - Banbury SVR. Making the total ^64.50.
