Didn't catch the FGW▸ (First Great Western) employee's name but when I came to buy my weekly ticket from THA to REI the  person was very helpful. This may not be to everyones cup of tea early on a Monday morning but it was worth mentioning.

The guy in front of me bought a day return to Pangbourne which reminded me of some scams someone here mentioned regarding cheap (illegal!) ways of getting into London...I would like to think this person genuinely was going to Pangbourne rather than abusing the system.

Better to get a reading west not pangbourne if you are doing that!

I regularly travel (maybe 2x a week, one way) to Reading from Reading West. As there is no open ticket office in the evenings, the ticket machines only accept card and there are no permit to travel machines; I go to Excess Fares at Reading and ask for the appropriate ticket, RDW to NBY» (Newbury - next trains). I then get the HST▸ (High Speed Train (Inter City class 43 125 units)) towards Frome.

However, being young (18) and as such, a "yob" - I always get a series of questions:
1) Where did you actually travel from?
2) What platform did the train leave from?
3) What time did the train leave?
4) Do you have any evidence that you were in Reading West?

and occasionally:
5) You know I can call BTP▸ (British Transport Police) and its illegal?

So whilst in your case Excess Fares were helpful, they never are for me.

I agree with EBrown about being questioned more stringently due to being young.

I saw a post recently which actually showed a still from the onboard CCTV▸ (Closed Circuit Tele-Vision) - which suprised me as I thought they were probably dummy cameras. So I guess if push came to shove the TOC could prove a pax▸ (passengers) boarded the train earlier than they claimed

Oh no - cameras work ok, but not sure how long the recording loop is....I think it's downloaded at the depot though
