Maidenhead railway station was closed for 15 minutes this afternoon and evacuated due to a fire.

Crews from the Maidenhead fire station attended a fire caused by a faulty light fitting at the station at 4pm with the station closed for 15 minutes while the small fire was dealt with.

The station was evacuated as a precaution with passengers also not allowed to get off of alighting trains.

Firefighter Crouch said: "I can imagine the people on the trains were not to happy, but the fire was contained to a small area, did not spread and caused no damage."

Crews left the scene at 4.30pm.

William Huskisson MP▸ (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

I'm surprised they managed to evacuate the station safely without state of the art  emergency exits at the end of each platform.
