Sad to see a threat of industrial action across FGW (First Great Western) services from 8th to 11th July - discussed at http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/coffeeshop/index.php?topic=15598.msg178329 .

I asked a question about ranger and rover tickets and what happens when industial action takes place during their validity - thinking it was a selfish question - but it turns out to be a concern of a number of members.   But I can't find an answer - regular tickets and seasons seem covered elsewhere, but what about rangers / rovers?  So - separate thread under "fares".

If there's a general link anyone has - please post it. That would be great.

Specifics ...

a) What if no trains are running across the whole area covered?

b) What if there's a very limited service in some of the area?  (e.g. FGW not running; SWT (South West Trains) and XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise)) running on Freedom of South West)

c) What if there's quite a few services running but action prevvents planned destinations being reached?

d) What if (on an 8 of 15) alternative transport has to be used several days before the industiral action in order to allow a return trip to be achieved to plan during the action (i.e. headed out of area to a distant business trip, coming back on a strike day)

e) What if alternative plans are made that are based on the declared intent to take action which is then postponed / cancelled at the last minute?

In my specific case the ticket was purchased on train on 28th June having joined at an an unmanned station with no working ticket machine - and at that point I was unaware of the threat of industrial action which could significanly effect my plans.

I would hope that additional days would be added to the validity to make up for the days lost - that would be the simplest solution.

Yes, tough if those days didn't suit the customer, I guess, but the same problem affects all those wanting to travel - they can't.

No doubt FGW (First Great Western) will shortly be explaining contingency plans and ticketing arrangements during the period of industrial action, as they did in the run up to the proposed Network Rail strike.

Rovers were not specifically mentioned last time but I recall an exchange with FGW's social media team. Can't remember the specifics, but I think a pro-rata refund was offered.
