Mark Carne, the chief executive of Network Rail, has advised the Board that he has decided to retire from the company later this year.  The timing of his announcement ensures that a new chief executive will be established in the role before the start of the next five year regulatory control period which begins in April 2019.

Mark Carne is a customer focused CEO▸ (Chief Executive Officer) knowing its not just the TOC▸ (Train Operating Company) n FOC▸ (Freight Operating Company, or possibly 'free of charge', depending on context) that are the customer but the travelling public, he also holds work force safety dear to his heart, as such Mark Carne I believe has been a very good CEO for Network Rail he has fought a number of "political" battles with the Government.  His payoff will not be a grandiose as a CEO of a private sector company NR» (Network Rail - home page) is a public sector company, as such has limits set by the Government, also he doesn't have big juicy share options as part of his remuneration.
