Work is now underway on a £80m project to build a new railway station on Merseyside.

Earthworks taking place to prepare the site in Headbolt Lane, Kirkby, for the construction of the new station building, platforms and car park later in the year

Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram was on-hand this week to see work get underway on the £80m scheme to build a new station at Headbolt Lane in Kirkby.

The new station plans include:
* Step-free access throughout the station
* A bus interchange
* Cycle storage
* Links to active travel networks
* Passenger waiting facilities and toilets
* Approximately 300 park and ride spaces

The interesting point here is how Merseyrail dc EMU^▸ (Electric Multiple Unit)'s will motor to this station. Battery trials have been mentioned but third rail extension is proposed if that doesn't work.

Evidently the Scousers are prepared to face down the ORR^» (Office of Rail and Road, formerly Office of Rail Regulation - about) and its "we shall all be murdered in our beds" safety advisers over extending the live rail. Would ORR dare keep a new £80M station in a deprived Northern town closed?

Others have commented on the Frankenstein allusion in the name. The more posh one would be Simonswood.
