Route affected Northern between Darlington and Whitby

A sinkhole has been discovered in close vicinity to the railway near Lealholm. Until a full safety inspection has taken place, services will not run between Battersby and Whitby.

We anticipate disruption will continue until approximately 14:00.

Alternative travel advice:

Customers may use North Yorkshire Moors Railway services between Grosmont and Whitby to help with journeys.

The following services will be amended with rail replacement transport provided between Battersby and Whitby:
- 10.46 Middlesbrough to Whitby will terminate at Battersby
- 12.48 Whitby to Middlesbrough will start at Battersby

I can't think of any previous occasion that I've seen a National Rail recommendation to customers to use heritage services because the franchise service is broken.   Or should I have posted this in the Windermere threads, or the Settle and Carlisle ones where heritage trains operated to fulfil National Rail timetables.

Not quite the same but ...

Five or so years ago Victoria station was paralyzed in the evening rush hour with massive quantities of ice on the conductor rail. Brighton passengers were advised to go to platform 2? where a direct service was about to depart. It departed on time - packed, hauled by steam!

It was one of the rail tour operator's specials.
