What?, where?, why? ... something in the "Across the West" area ... one of what will perhaps be an irregular series of posts from my camera roll during this month These off-colour ovine beasties (closer to argon that neon) have been appearing all over the place - not quite epidemic, but still getting quite common. There's one in Didcot, for example, and we've even had one in Wokingham since last August. That's in the new "regenerated" bit of the town centre, full of new retail units that the council have been trying to fill. They have been surprisingly successful, numerically, but the new businesses (retail and bar/cafes) all echo your question "why?". And now we have got used to the notion of "essential retail", we know what they aren't. |

Yes. So - who was St Denys? From https://stdenys.church/heritage/stdenysDenys was born in Italy early in the 3rd century, probably about 210 AD. Nothing is definitely known about the date or place of his birth, or his early life.
He became a priest and in 245 Fabian, the Bishop of Rome, consecrated him and six others as missionary bishops to work in Gaul (France) where many Christians had suffered terribly during the persecutions set in motion by the Roman Emperor Decius.
Denys arrived in Paris as its first bishop with two companions, the priest Rusticus and the deacon Eleutherius. They settled on an island in the Seine and built a church there. From there they went out preaching the gospel. The local pagan leaders incited the people to force the Roman governor, Fescenninus, to stop their teaching. When Denys and his companions refused to stop, they were seized, tortured and beheaded on the hill of martyrs? Montmartre on October 9th 258. Why two staircases on the one bridge? |

 The three way (road, rail, water) public transport interchange at Ryde Esplanade. All three modes have their clear and obvious place. * Bus travel in and near Ryde is the only option for so many people to get within a short walk (a hundred yards?) of their final destination with a myriad of tarmacked roads * Rail travel makes huge sense to Sandown and Shanklin - breaking the back of the journey quickly and smoothly and for a mass of people (you may argue things like "smooth" at the moment, but it's streets ahead of a bus) * Water travel, until there's a bridge or tunnel to Portsmouth, will be a necessity to reach the rest of the UK▸ . And without the likes of Nichola Sturgeon and Arlene Foster in the area, Westminster is hardly likely to even consider a fixed link. |
