Tube and bus fares will rise by an average of almost five per cent in a fortnight, Sadiq Khan announced on Monday.

Transport for London (TfL^» (Transport for London - about)) has received a final funding offer from the government in order to help it recover from the Covid-19 pandemic, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has said.

Mr Shapps told BBC London TfL needed to move towards "driverless trains" in order to modernise "like Paris".

Talks between the government and TfL have been continuing for weeks and the existing deal expired at midday.

More than £5bn in emergency funds has been provided to TfL since May 2020.

There have been repeated rows between the government and TfL over its funding and the cause of its financial woes.

TfL^» (Transport for London - about) have I believe already given the government an extensive feasibility report on what would be involved in moving towards driverless trains, including possible timescales, costs, longterm financial savings, safety implications and other factors. The ball is to a great extent now back in the government's court to decide how much they want to help.
