From SWR» source: The issue appears to be related to bacteria in the bio-fuel that appears to be impacted by warmer weather and it can affect the fuel tanks in the depots and fuel filters and warming tanks on units. Fleet are aware of the problem and samples have been take and sent for analysis to identify the particular type as this is important in how it is irradicated. In parallel to this they are trying to understand the source of the contamination. Short term the problem can be mitigated by changing the fuel filters and if necessary, the cleaning the fuel warmers. Fleet are working on a plan to understand the status of all the stock and over time how frequently the they need changing / cleaning.
Train plan for tomorrow issued at 2030 this evening with basic principles 2 hourly service Exeter - Sal, hourly Salisbury - Basingstoke, 2 hourly Romsey Rounders and all services via the Western region cancelled.

A small proportion of biodiesel has been added to road diesel fuel for some years without any widespread problems, so why is it such a problem on trains ?

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards,luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU▸ is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

Almost all diesel fuel sold in the UK▸ contains a small proportion of bio diesel, and a much larger proportion of crude oil derived diesel fuel. I am not aware of any special "railway blend" The engines used in class 159s are closely based on standard types used in many other applications, not a special railway version. So why such a problem ? Fuel filters on engines should be simple to replace and ample stocks should be held to allow for frequent changes. Bulk fuel supplies in storage tanks can be cleansed in situ. If gross water contamination is suspected, then a little fuel and water should be withdrawn from the very bottom of the tank. |

I was on the 0912 from Plymouth to Reading this morning and it was noticeably busier from Exeter - normally quite a quiet one - suspect people are using GWR▸ services as an alternative?

SWR» managed to run the hourly service today between Exeter and Andover, with engineering works at Basingstoke meaning rail replacement buses from there to Woking! That clearly gave them the number of units needed.
SWR Journey Check shows its back to the two hourly service tomorrow.

Further update today on SWR» website about Thursday On Thursday 27th April, most trains between Exeter St Davids and Waterloo will run as scheduled however some will start or finish at a different station to usual. Journey planners have been updated to reflect this. |

From that .... Neil Drury, SWR» ’s engineering director, said: “We’re sorry for the disruption that customers in the Basingstoke, Exeter, Romsey, Salisbury and Yeovil areas have felt since last Friday.
"It was a difficult decision to amend our timetables and we have worked hard to restore services as quickly as we can. Interesting word - it should have been and easy decision when all the trains started to be gum up. Disappointing would have been a better word. |
