Reported in the Morning Star - https://morningstaronline.co.uk/article/trains-and-railway-stations-are-being-left-disgraceful-state-cleanliness-rmt-study

Quote
PASSENGER trains and railway stations are being left in a “disgraceful” state by cleaning contractors, according to a damning RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime & Transport Workers) report.

Cleaners working for such companies have dismissed inspections as “superficial” and 80 per cent said that they had been forced by heavy workloads to cut corners in their jobs, a survey by the rail union found.

The union argued that this was happening because profits, not passengers, were the main priority of train operators and cleaning contractors.

I am sure the Morning Star is entirely objective and unbiased when it comes to issues such as outsourcing and privatisation and not at all ideologically driven Wink

I have looked for - and failed to find - that report. But I have found the RMT's campaign page at https://www.rmt.org.uk/campaigns/rail/justice-for-cleaners/ and as you might expect it's far more about the terms and conditions of the people who work in these roles that about the customer requirements for clean trains and stations.  I will add - a personal observation - that the people I come across working in the cleaning roles are almost always lovely and hard working people and I have a huge appreciation of them and the work they do.

From Rail News

Quote
Monday briefing: Operators accused of inadequate cleaning

Cleanliness condemnation

The RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime & Transport Workers) is accusing train operators of failing to maintain proper cleaning standards, because of ‘alarming deficiences’ among cleaning contractors. The union said it has surveyed 800 cleaners, and that 75 per cent say their workload has ‘surged’ since they started their jobs, 80 per cent feel compelled to cut corners because of ‘overwhelming pressure’, and that 85 per cent often come under pressure to take on additional tasks.

I would love to also see the base data from the RMT. I may have missed it - if so, could someone please let me know or post a follow up link.  The "cleanliness condemnation" from the RMT would carry much more weight for me is I could see their survey / raw source data.
