This is actually a bad example, because although there are a number of so called 'parliamentary' services that could be pulled with no real issues arising (other than howls of anguish from a few trainspotters), this route provides a diversionary terminus for Chiltern if there is engineering work on their own line, and is used by freight - so as far as I can see the line would remain open even if the passenger service ceased, and Chiltern would run route learning trains anyway - but possibly not in the middle of the day.

Any news article on the subject should really differentiate between 'withdrawal of the passenger service' and 'closure of the line'.  It is the latter that deserves most scrutiny, as it is a bit of a one way step...
