There have been fairly regular test runs between Reading and Swindon with the unit shuttling back and forth several times.

Seen here at Reading last Wednesday night.

{snip photos}

RTT» (Real Time Trains - website) is showing similar runs from Monday to Thursday of this coming week.

Does anyone know if they are they running pan up between Tilehurst and Didcot yet?

Started nearly 3 months ago.  Overnight 17/18 July was the first run with pans up according to the Railway Gazette:

Includes a video, was linked to in this thread at the time, post 768 by ChrisB...

I believe the whole point of the current North Pole-Swindon Class 800 test runs is to gather as much data as possible about the switching at speed between 25kV AC (Alternating Current, or can mean Air Conditioning, depending on context. The second meaning is often used in a railway context and more generally) traction and diesel generated traction.

Thank you, I had rather hoped it might be something like that.

Another PR (Public Relations) stunt I believe with GW» (Great Western - used as an abbreviation for the area / lines under the Great Western franchise, as opposed to FGW which includes "First", the company operating them too. For tickets - about) bigwigs on board I guess. Runs today from Paddington to Swindon and return

Held at Ladbroke Grove and now currently parked up at Southall yard, not exactly a swift journey

Edit, now heading back towards London?

Doesn't seem like a great advertisement for the IEP (Intercity Express Program / Project. This will offer more capacity on routes, save money, give a consistent and safe service and meet customer requirements. Intended to replace HSTs.)? Does anyone know what went wrong?

The fire system alarm on the train was activated apparently.  No fire and it was reset ok (presumably by isolating the engine?), but decision taken to return to the depot.

Yes I saw it go through Taplow at 1115! Bit noisier than I thought it might be.

Return run passing the worksite at Uffington Station. Unit was 800 002.

I thought it was remarkably quiet!  Smiley

For comparison an HST (High Speed Train (Inter City class 43 125 units)) on 1A16 Penzance to Padd via Bristol ran past a few minutes beforehand
