The charity reference is clearly an error. However, I am still left with the rather disconcerting impression that there is a trade off between investment in level crossing safety and the payment of directors' bonuses.

Sorry but this argument that NR^» (Network Rail - home page) is not spending enough on level crossing safety because it's paying its directors market rates is starting to get on my nerves.

Of course there's a trade off. It's the way a company works. Taking that argument to its logical conclusion NR would pay all its directors (and indeed everyone else in the company) minimum wage, scrap the company bonus scheme and pour all of the money saved into the level crossing safety scheme. Which I'm sure you would agree, would be a very strange way of doing business.

Indeed, the crossing issue is a distraction from the more general issue of remuneration of senior staff, and whether high remuneration has any relationship with performance.
