Seventh set.

I can only identify one picture and have no idea how it is linked to the other. Perhaps the link is there isn't one?

The second picture of the set is, I believe, the ferry landing stage for Bristol Temple Meads at Temple Quay.

The first picture of that pair is of Harpers Ferry in Jefferson County, West Virginia.

It's been used before - see http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/coffeeshop/index.php?topic=3471.msg27407#msg27407  Wink Cheesy Grin

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

Set 7 ... you have both locations correct and have actually stated the (tenuous in this case) link in your answers, gents

Set 3 ... poking very close around the answer, but it's not the Cheltenham area, and thinking it is will loose the connection

Set 4 ... bridge location is quite close

Oh well wondered about Denton rather than Reddish South.

But what puzzles me is where did you take the picture of Norton Bridge from? It looks like you are standing in the Down Main or ws it a long lens?

Any clues on 1 please?

You're correct, it wouldn't be Dinton.   It's somewhere else  Grin

I'm in a passing train!

In the 3rd Set - First Picture, Is that Radstock by any chance? I have a feeling I close to the link.

Something to do with the Frome - Radstock Railway?

Perhaps a line that was closed but still has track in place whereas other parts of line don't have the track in place?

Would I also be warm to the answer if I mentioned that the Railway Line from the now Frome Branch onto the old Radstock / Midsomer Norton / Bath Green Park is still open and in use as far as Whatley Wink

Nick has the Radstock - Frome line (with cycle track beside it), set 3 lower picture
thetrout has correctly identified set 3, upper picture as Radstock as well.

I think you have all the elements between you all - both former railway lines climbing out of Radstock ...

Something ... or nothing ... links each of these pairs.  Can you spot the links?

First set:

Fourth set:

Here are the ones remaining ... and the hint that tells me that there's probably one set with no real link.  A further hint I gave told you that one of these pairs does have some sort of link ... if you can place them (towns / cities) you may find a solution to the riddle of why such different looking pictures relate!

Fourth Set:

I reckon the first picture of the 2x 153's was taken a number of years ago. Simply because the rear 153 still has it's Regional Railways livery. Wink

I strongly suspect the station is Westbury and the second picture is somewhere in Melksham I believe (Please disqualify for remembering again if you need to!). As I remember that grahame had that picture as his avatar for a while.

So, is the link the TransWilts line of when we used to have a more regular service on the line in the days of Wessex Trains than we do now with First Great Western?

Fourth Set:

That set is indeed an old picture of Westbury, and the Pack Horse bridge which crosses the river Avon near Melksham, but now where you said previously (you were more specific), so I didn't note it as being correct.   This is the pair that I hinted at that really doesn't have too much to connect them although (I suppose) services from Westbury to Chippenham would be an excellent way to make a circular (walk out and ride back, or vice versa) walk along canal and river bank including passing by this bridge.

Now - there *is* something definite in common that links the first set of pictures, but you'll have to look way, way back in time for the rootal cause of the commonality!
