All these replies bring home to me what a difference there is with some other European railways. Looking back, we have travelled in the recent past on Italian, Dutch and Corsican railways (now that last you really must do one day!).

In each case, we simply either booked online or at the station without endless hours of seeking of funny routes and stopovers and with fares being so reasonable, we actually chose to book first class from Rome to Salerno, for instance.

Tell me that I have somehow missed the point and please explain how. If the railway can't make money on ^18 return to Bath from Maiden Newton, then it needs to up its performance.
