 Hi folks, I have been reading with some interest and a degree of gleeful anticipation, of the new train services which will start in December, from Melksham station.  I have been looking at ways of weaning my lifestyle away from my little metal box on wheels, to something a little more environmentally friendly.  I haven't bought a senior citizens railcard yet, but maybe that will be an idea if I start to travel by train regularly.

My real love of trains lies with steam (and I'm pleased to note, reading some of the blogs, that I'm not the only fan of 'real trains'!).  I guess it's in my genes, as my great-grandfather was an engine driver on the LMS▸ (London Midland Scottish - 1923 to 1948) Royal Scot, and another great-grandfather was a guardsman on the same service.  My grandfather (son of the guardsman) wanted to work on the trains on his return from WW1, but unfortunately the injuries he sustained in that gruesome conflict left him having to undertake the less arduous duties of a booking office clerk.

Enough for now, I hope I will soon master this posting business and be able to join in with some of the topics abounding on this site.

William Huskisson MP▸ (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

Even myself, living in distant Bristol, is looking forward to that first train on 8th December.

A very warm welcome - both to the forum and the building excitement about the forthcoming improved train service between Swindon and Westbury.

I'll admit I am a fan of steam trains too - although I prefer the Great Western ones.  Probably because I have lived within the sound of the GW» (Great Western - used as an abbreviation for the area / lines under the Great Western franchise, as opposed to FGW which includes "First", the company operating them too. For tickets - about) mainline all my life.
