I know my colleague 'bignosemac' really enjoys his research on these occasional questions ... so where was I being delayed, on that particular day?  Wink

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

Hmm.  No suggestions so far, so I'll widen the picture:

We're on or near the Wrington Vale Light Railway again, aren't we?  Tongue

To the left of the picture would have been the end of the short spur to Blagdon Lake.

You were not oceans away with that suggestion, Timmer.  Wink

We are (or were) indeed. Grin

That is the view northwards along the dam built to create Blagdon Lake in the 1890s.

Directly behind me was the terminus station of the Wrington Vale Light Railway - now a charming private residence, as featured on the front cover of 'Somerset Stations, Then and Now', by Mike Oakley (ISBN 978-1-904-34994-5)
