From the Hereford Times:

Quote
Delays for commuters at Hereford railway station

Arriva Trains Wales said normal service is resumed from Hereford railway station this morning after a driver reportedly parked a train in the wrong place.

The train blocked the southbound track at the station from 5.40am until it was moved at 8am.

A spokesman for Arriva Trains Wales said a freight train was blocking the line and they had to get a relief driver to come and move it.

A caller to the Hereford Times newsroom, who was at the station this morning, said the delay was due to a driver parking a freight train in the wrong place on the line before going home.

He said this meant platform 2 was out of use until another driver could come and move it.

The Arriva Trains Wales spokesman said: ^It did disrupt our down the southbound service in and out of Hereford. We made arrangements for replacement bus services, taxis and arranged for rail tickets to be valid on other transport.

^It did cause a bit of disruption this morning which we are sorry for.^

He said services are now back to normal. There were delays of approximately one hour.

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

News this morning indicated "Waiting driver".    The length was such that it blocked access to the 2 Down Direction platforms.    Passengers were blocked back to Craven Arms with delays up to 80 mins.

We don't know his circumstances or what his diagram was.   He may have worked his maximum permissible hours or his Freight Company slipped up in not rostering relief.

No problem with the driver why he wouldn't work any further.    He didn't know the road !!!  Company responsibility

Agreed the driver may have been prevented from working forward by hours or route knowledge, but I thought drivers were supposed to wait with their "charges" until their relief arrived?

He might have done.   I said that he didn't know the road beyond Hereford so whether he waited or not, the train still couldn't have proceeded.
