Last night's storm has resulted in another landslip in the Wanborough area, closing the line between Ash and Guildford. An hourly shuttle is running between Reading and Ash and NRE^▸ (National Rail Enquiries) reports a similar schedule on the 28th.

Fingers are crossed it won't be a long job to fix the problem.

On the North Downs, is it practical for GWR^▸ (Great Western Railway) to run a Guildford to Redhill shuttle (I think they're already stopping short of Gatwick Airport until the new year?)

Cancellations to services between Ash and Redhill
Due to a landslip between Ash and Redhill all lines are closed.
Train services running through these stations will be cancelled. Disruption is expected until the end of the day on 31/12/20.

Eastbound direction
Train services will operate between Reading and Ash with replacement road transport operating between North Camp via Guildford to Redhill. Passengers on train services which have originated at Reading who require Guildford, or stations beyond towards Redhill are advised to alight at North Camp to use Rail Replacement Service from there. Any passengers travelling to Ash should remain on the train.

Westbound direction
Passengers travelling from Redhill and stations to Guildford (inclusive) will be conveyed by road transport. Those who require stations along the Ash to Reading route will be conveyed by road transport to connect with the train services to Reading at North Camp station.

Engineers are working around the clock to install a sheet pile wall, to prevent the embankment from moving any further. This is likely to last until Monday 11 January.

For the time being, there are no services running, but we are aiming to re-open the line by Wednesday 6.

Network Rail have issued an update following the reopening of the line:

Train services restarted from 6 January on the line between Guildford, Aldershot and Wokingham, following a 40 metre landslip near the small village of Wanborough over the Christmas period.

During Storm Bella heavy rain caused the embankment to deteriorate leaving the track unsupported; the line was closed for safety reasons and emergency work was carried out. Network Rail engineers stabilised the site near Westwood Lane bridge, sinking 17-metre long steel sheets into the ground to prevent the earth from moving any further.

Mark Killick, route director, Network Rail Wessex said: ?Our engineers have worked tirelessly to carry out these essential repairs, and I want to thank everyone involved for their efforts and to passengers and local residents for their patience and understanding.

?The emergency work is now complete and the line has reopened for critical workers, however our team will stay on site to deliver the remaining activity and ensure the embankment is secure for years to come.?

Derek Butcher, Network Rail Southern region's route asset manager for geotechnics,  said: ?London Clay is not a material we would build railways out of these days, but our Victorian ancestors weren?t so advanced with their knowledge of soil mechanics. At this location the embankment had absorbed so much water over December, it moved out from underneath the track, leaving the railway unsupported.?
