A NEW early-morning commuter rail service has launched between Carlisle and Edinburgh.

TransPennnine Express - who are operating the route - said the 5.57am service will depart from the Citadel station between Monday to Friday, and will call at Lockerbie at 6.20am before arriving into Edinburgh Waverley at 7.33am.

The service will also run on Saturdays, leaving Carlisle at a slightly later time of 6.04am.

The changes follow a rollout of a new timetable for rail operators, which came into effect last Sunday (December 15).

A spokesman from TransPennine Express said: “We have introduced a new timetable on our Anglo-Scottish route.

"We are bringing in a number of service improvements on our network, with Carlisle seeing a new early morning service between Carlisle – Lockerbie – Edinburgh Waverley operating Monday to Saturday.

First early local train for many years!   The 06:10 Carlisle to Glasgow - which called at many more stations (there were many more stations available for it to call at in those days) was the local train that was involved in the Qunintishill Disaster on 22nd May 1915.
