I was booked on the 06:30 ferry off Dieppe tomorrow but it has been cancelled due to bad weather and I am now on the 18:00 which gets into Newhaven too late for the last train home.

I have booked ticket to collect from the TVM (Ticket Vending Machine) at Newhaven Town when I get there ...  Off peak singles Newhaven to Southampton via Barnham, and Southampton to Melksham.   What is my best course of action?

Does the following mean that as long as your journey's been started, the ticket you have is valid for travel the following day, as long as it's not been possible to complete the journey on the first day?

Mark

https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/tickets-railcards-and-offers/ticket-types/off-peak-and-super-off-peak-tickets/off-peak-and-super-off-peak-tickets-terms-and-conditions/

4.4 Off-Peak Singles and the outward portion of Off-Peak Returns are valid for travel on the date shown on the ticket and until 04:29 the following morning. If the journey cannot be completed in this time, the ticket may be used to continue the journey on the following day. Unless otherwise indicated in the relevant restriction code, time restrictions apply as from the initial origin station on both days. The appropriate restrictions for the actual day on which travel is being undertaken apply (for example, it may be that if day 1 is on Sunday, no restrictions apply, but on day 2, the Monday-Friday restrictions apply). All travel must be completed by 04:29 in the morning after this second day. Please note that break of journey is not permitted on some journeys, as detailed in the ticket restrictions.

I have been online ... and swapped the tickets for ones for tomorrow - it warned there might be an admin fee but I appear not to have incurred one.  Will report back further.  Probably easier as I had not collected the tickets but it has only let me go "mobile" - a new step for me though got used to it with Interrail so I suppose I can manage GWR (Great Western Railway).

Delighted to report that the ticketing worked excellently.

I was told my QR (QR Code - Quick Response code (2D bar code)) code was only valid with the replaced tickets, so I collected them when I got to Newhaven Town (and the day after they were dated) but in practise only my QR code was needed. Also stated that I would need my old persons railcard but again that was not needed.

I am probably convinced to use mobile ticketing after trying it out in 20 counties in the last 2 months ... which, however, is not really  good news for those who don't have phones or the confidence / knowledge to work out the public transport systems.

According to statista[part-paywalled] 96% of 16-24 year olds have a smartphone, falling to 69% of over-65's. Needless to say this is increasing year on year.

By way of a comparison, 74% of over-17s in England have a driving licence and 86.5% of people in England and Wales have a passport.
