Grenfell Tower will be demolished, the Government is set to announce.

Every time I go past the tower on the circle line it makes me shudder

On Wednesday night, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner met with the families of the 72 people who died in the fire.

It is understood she told them that the Kensington tower block will be razed to ground level and a memorial erected on the site.

But no work will begin before the eighth anniversary of the tragic inferno on June 14.

An official announcement is expected on Friday.

A spokesperson for Grenfell Next of Kin, a group representing some bereaved families, said Ms Rayner had "announced the decision that the tower will have to be carefully deconstructed".

Fire ripped through the 24-storey North Kensington tower block in June 2017, killing 72 people and sparking a national scandal over building safety and material standards.

An update, from the BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page):

Final Grenfell anniversary before tower comes down

Bereaved families, survivors and local residents will come together in west London this weekend to remember the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire.

The Met Police investigation into what led to the "avoidable" tragedy in 2017 which claimed the lives of 72 people – 18 of whom were children - is still ongoing.

In a few months' time, work will begin to take down the 23-storey building, so this year's eighth anniversary will be especially poignant.

Many families and survivors believe the tower should stay until there are criminal prosecutions while some local residents say they find it difficult to see every day.

The BBC articles continues, in detail, so I won't quote all of it here: please do click on the link if you want to read more.

A very sad event. CfN.

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.
