A collision occurred and part of the footbridge landed on the train, which included a guard’s van carrying railway volunteers. There were no injuries.

Taking into account the amount of metalwork flying about, that was very fortunate.

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

I did get a little frustrated by this; surprised/impressed by the speed the RAIB (Rail Accident Investigation Branch) had apparently worked at, I eagerly clicked the "preliminary examination" and "safety digest" links to find they just took me to pages telling me what those phrases meant, the actual safety digest itself understandably not likely to be ready for some time yet.  Is it just me, or could that paragraph in the RAIB press release have been more helpfully worded?

Hmm.  Roll Eyes

I'm reminded of a rather scurrilous suggestion, many years ago: RAIB (Rail Accident Investigation Branch) means, 'Reporting About It, Belatedly'.

"You may very well think that: I couldn't possibly comment."  Lips sealed

(That is a comment from me personally, not from the Administrator / Moderator team here on the Coffee Shop forum. CfN.)
