The current extreme heat is having consequences far beyond the railway.
A major hospital in Plymouth has suffered breakdowns of central chillers serving a number of critical functions.
An NHS trust reports that ALL MRI scanners are out of use due to overheating.

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards,luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU▸ is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

Friday's red warning area is much smaller, nothing west of Swindon, Hungerford or Andover, also doesn't include the Southampton or Portsmouth area
Of course remains to be seen if all trains that operate without going in the red area are run normally, (unlikely)
Saturday doesn't have any red warnings, although there remains amber warning east of Reading. Everything in GWR▸ area west of Reading has no warnings (not even yellow), so would be rather poor show if still using weather as an excuse by Saturday.

From the BBC» : UK▸ temperatures forecast to exceed 30C as another heatwave imminent
Parts of the UK are set to heat up from this weekend, with forecasters warning that temperatures could exceed 30C.
For some areas this will mark the third heatwave of the year.
Highs could reach 33C for southern and south-eastern England with 30C possible as far north as South Yorkshire. It will be cooler in the west.
While this latest hot spell is not expected to be as intense as the record-breaking heatwave in late June, it looks set to last significantly longer, potentially into the middle of the month.

The current hot weather, is seriously impacting frozen and chilled food storage in super markets, and home delivery of same.
For some time, many chilled and frozen foods were "unavailable due to store modernisation" which is code for freezers and chillers broken. Then when back in stock I ordered some for delivery, only to find all chilled and frozen items, left off the order I presume that the fridge unit on the van expired en-route.
Now most chilled and frozen foods are unavailable due to "ongoing store modernisation" which is code for it broke again.
And on a related note, the central air conditioning where I used to work, failed completely. They should not have made me redundant !

Same story in my local large supermarket, although they were very honest with the reason saying the fridges couldn't cope with the hot weather. Also a smaller shop local to me was closed yesterday with the fridges empty when I peered through the window. The chocolate was also absent from the shelves indicating it might have been a store wide air-con failure and not just the fridges. And to top it off, my Costa had run out of ice so I couldn't get a nice refreshing frappe! |

The poor reliability of food chillers and freezers is a growing problem.
Measure to improve matters could be taken such as;
Design for a space temperature inside the supermarket of 35 degrees. To allow for air conditioning failures.
Design for a space temperature in an external plant room of at least 60 degrees.
Design for an external air temperature of 45 degrees.
For external pumps and fans, consider installing a bypass to the motor overload protection, that will in an emergency permit the motor to run to destruction.
