From station to station, back to Bristol city....

I'm rather of the opinion that the loop was already worthwhile at the time of the spur decision.  As mentioned above, Avonmouth was an employment area for Henbury then as well as now. A spur at Henbury Station was never going to be a realistic way of commuting there.  Furthermore, the argument ran that the additional cost of bringing the loop up to passenger standards was comparatively minor.
Unfortunately, as I recall, the the leader of the then pre WECA» (West of England Mayoral Combined Authority - about) local enterprise zone did not "get it" and the Port of Bristol Authority were positively hostile to the idea.  That just left the local MP (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) as a rather lonely pro loop voice.
It's new people and new decision making bodies now but I'm not counting my chickens just yet.

Mark Weston is of course the Councillor for Henbury & Brentry - I suspect that a fair chunk of his constituents work in Avonmouth and would benefit from an extension of the line to Severn Beach / Avonmouth, particularly if a new station was built near the Amazon depot.

Some years ago, I was working in the now closed Jobcentre in Stapleton Road. I wasn't doing work coaching stuff, but was aware of developments. A logistics centre in Severn Beach, before Amazon, needed night shift staff. I realised that very few people seemed to know that Severn Beach was accessible by train. One manager, who in fairness lived elsewhere, asked how people would get to Temple Meads, and was shocked when I pointed out the station a couple of hundred metres away. Despite this, I saw a number of young men without their own transport jump at the chance, showing that rumours of nobody wanting a job were unfounded, none of whom were put off by the train times not fitting the shift pattern. Alas, having to arrive at work almost an hour before the shift starts, then spend over an hour in a shelter on the the platform hoping the first train home wasn't cancelled can knock the enthusiasm out of the keenest young worker. Many did not last the second week. I suggested asking the company to be more flexible with timings, but despite their desperation for staff, they couldn't/wouldn't change. Which is sad.

Mark Weston is probably in a far better position to talk to employers on Severnside and in Avonmouth about things like this, and may be able to boost any business case for the loop with answers to the right questions. Poor transport links are often cited as a hurdle to employment and expansion, so why not take the opportunity to do some real in-depth research into not what would be achieved as things stand, but what could be achieved by linking housing and employment centres well away from the traditional central area.

That's coming on quite quickly now by the look of it.  The platform edge block laying that was shown in the footage looks like it's a fairly speedy process and I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of those blocks are now in situ.  It's really beginning to look like a station.

The motion tabled by Councillor Mark Weston to debate the Henbury Loop at a Bristol City Council meeting apparently fell short of time but instead there's been some proposal to run the Severn Beach Line to Bristol Parkway which falls short of a loop.I t's reported in the below link to Bristol Live:

https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/transport-planners-looking-extending-severn-10758098

Frankly the scheme seems somewhat half baked to me, requiring seemingly a reversal at Parkway and not realising the gains that a loop would achieve.  A  compromise that ultimately helps hardly anyone?

Without more details it is difficult to judge this.

We know YTL want trains running 'across the diamond' (e.g. directly from Brabazon to Bristol Parkway), and there are clear benefits to this in terms of getting people to and from the planned arena and new town. It also ticks boxes regarding the Brabazon - Parkway - Science Park 'arc'. And it could help link up potential journeys from North Bristol towards Gloucester and Swindon.

Questions that strike me are:

  • Is there capacity at Parkway?
  • How frequently do these trains need to run to make it a useful service?
  • Will this be achieved by sacrificing some Severn Beach journeys?

If the Bristol Port Company still objects to more trains using the level crossing at Avonmouth - which, as I understand it, was one of the main objections to the loop - then it's hard to see where the capacity comes from.

There has been talk of putting in a new north-to-east chord at Holesmouth Jct which could allow Severn Beach trains to get to Parkway via Henbury. This would allow for something similar to what's being mooted here without the need for more trains over the Avonmouth crossings - but that doesn't seem to be mentioned here.

An interesting question is what percentage of Severn Beach residents get off the train at intermediate stations before Temple Meads?

If a new north-to-east chord was put in place, would many actually prefer a train to Temple Meads via Brabazon and Filton Abbey Wood, particularly if it was faster?

As for trains across the diamond, don't GWR (Great Western Railway) have some Class 387 services which terminate at Bristol Parkway? With a bit of extra wiring (and maybe some more platform) they could conceivably be terminated at Brabazon, freeing up platform space at Parkway.

From https://www.passenger.chat/SVB.html but I'm not convinced by accuracy of ticketing over the years

Rightly so. Pre-January 2023 figures for intermediate stations on the Severn Beach Line are without doubt wrong. After that date, it bacame a penalty fare route and ticketing information became much more accurate. See https://bristolrailcampaign.org.uk/penalty-fares-severn-beach/ for BRC's argument.

A quick question regarding Brabazon Station if I may?  Does anyone know if there is anywhere yet that has public access that you can actually see the station site from?  With all the new development surrounding the station (not just the arena) I'm wondering if there are now any publicly accessible roads opened around there yet?
