GWR (Great Western Railway) is making changes to their app: if you use it you'll need to take action. More from GWR here:

As part of this update, new users will not be able to sign-up for pay-as-you-go accounts from 12:00 on Tuesday 17 February until 17:00 on Tuesday 24 February.

Existing pay-as-you-go customers will be able to access their accounts as normal until 22:00 on Monday 23 February, when the update takes place. It is expected that pay-as-you-go accounts will be available again at 17:00 on Tuesday 24 February.

A bit of a pain, if going to work on Tuesday morning using PAYG (Pay as you go).

Immediately after the update, you will only be able to buy one journey per transaction. This can be a single or return journey, or a return journey made up of two single tickets.

If you need tickets for multiple journeys, please complete them as separate purchases.

We are working hard to restore multiple-journey bookings as soon as possible.

More of a pain as multiple usage of the same payment card to the same retailer often flags as fraudulent usage.

There's some discussion of the new app on the frequent traveller site 'Head For Points':

https://www.headforpoints.com/2026/02/21/new-gwr-app/

People in the discussions there are seriously suggesting that GWR (Great Western Railway) are purposely doing this out of spite for losing the franchise.

Google suggests when I ask for "gwr app changes"

Key GWR (Great Western Railway) App Changes (Feb 2026):

Log-in Required: A full password reset is necessary.

Ticket Loss Warning: Existing bookings made before the change may not appear in the new app; users are advised to have their booking references ready.

Reduced Booking Capability: Only one journey (single or return) can be booked per transaction initially.

PAYG (Pay as you go) Updates: Pay-as-you-go customers must confirm bank card details to continue usage.

Functionality: While some features are reduced, the app still supports mobile e-tickets and live, seat-location guidance.

It is recommended to check the app and web updates closely, as some functionality may be limited during the transition

I was under the impression that the SWR» (South Western Railway - about) app was the same / similar as GWR (Great Western Railway) just with different branding. That was when they were both under majority First Group control. I haven't seen any changes to the SWR app since nationalisation so I wonder if that's also going to change.

Attempting to pay for a ticket today (Frome - Bath Spa single) and having gone though all the stages as far as 'Pay' - with a card saved on the app and which had seen a previous successful transaction - it implacably refused to activate the 'Pay now' button. I've been back through things and can't spot why that is. It's still refusing to purchase the ticket. (I'm at home now, mind...)
