Quote
Secretary of State. Traveller. TV▸ (Thames Valley, or TeleVision, depending on context) superstar. The inimitable Michael Portillo joins us live on stage to share funny, insightful, and poignant stories from his extraordinarily rich and varied life.

The son of a refugee who rose to become one of Britain’s leading politicians and best loved broadcasters, Michael Portillo’s life has been a game of two halves. As a statesman he served under Margaret Thatcher, ran for the leadership of the Conservative Party, and lost his seat in one of the most famous moments in British political history, only to become one of the nation’s favourite broadcasters, sparring with Diane Abbott and Andrew Neil and enthralling millions of us with his travels on the world’s greatest railways.

First in the west (well, almost!) - Oxford, 29th October 2026. to Fareham, 16th March 2027.  Via Truro, Malvern and Salisbury.

Fair enough - provided he doesn't refer to my local railway station as 'Nailsea & Blackwell', as he did in a previous series.  Sad  Shocked Roll Eyes

William Huskisson MP▸ (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

Cor, quite pricey!  There must be some impressive special effects or an orchestra playing while he talks...

And at the University of Exeter Great Hall on Thursday 12th November for which SWTSMBO▸ (She Who Thinks She Must Be Obeyed (affectionate term for wife or female partner)) and I booked tickets some time ago. Very much looking forward to this. On the booking site it looks like around 65% of tickets have been sold with plenty remaining at £40 & £45.

We saw him at the Wiltshire Music Centre in Bradford on Avon a few years ago, it was very interesting.
