I've just been looking at getting to Weymouth for the day (and similarly Penzance) on a Saturday and quite frankly I think some of the timetable planners should be shot.

The 0811 Paignton - Exmouth used to provide a connections at Newton Abbot for Penzance and London Paddington, the latter I have caught a number of times due to useful connections at Castle Cary. However this year things have changed:

0811 Paignton - Exmouth arrives Newton Abbot 0827

Departures from Newton Abbot at a similar time:
0827 London Paddington
0827 Penzance

Quite frankly that is a mockery. There is nothing to stop the 0811 leaving 5 minutes earlier as it gets into Paignton at 0758 from the previous working. I know for a fact that the 0827 to London will be fairly quiet as it starts from Plymouth and a few passengers from Torbay would do it good. (It calls at Castle Cary, Westbury and Pewsey which is very useful).

So if you are insane you risk the 0 minutes connection or catch the 0708 train (the same train than forms the 0811 from Paignton!)

Catching the 0708 gives you a 62 minute connection at Newton Abbot (fun!) and I know for a fact that is impossible to get to Paignton station for that time on a bus.

What a farce!

Rant over!

I feel your pain Devon_Metro...

I was in a similar situation when I used to finish work at a remote site... I would catch the First Group bus into Chippenham, so I could take the train to Bristol... What time did that arrive in Bristol...? 19:45

What time did the Taunton Train Leave...?! 19:44...! Roll Eyes

Really Annoying! However, given the fact that the Knights Templar is a minutes walk from BRI» (Bristol Temple Meads - next trains)... and that they have free WiFi... That was never too much of a problem! Wink

Just a note to say that this situation has been rectified, with the timings shifting back to 0806 from Paignton, thus providing connections at Newton Abbot. Cheers FGW (First Great Western)  Smiley
