There has been something of a flurry of posting activity regarding Castle Cary station (which is great!), so I've taken the opportunity to do some of my 'moving and merging'.

I've merged several historic topics here, to provide one hopefully definitive source of information about Castle Cary station.  I have also retained many of the original topic headings within those historic posts, for context and clarity.

I hope this helps.  CfN (Chris from Nailsea, an administrator on this forum)Wink

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

Castle Cary Town Council and Ansford Parish Council have a applied for a Community Governance Review on a proposed merger in May 2027. The new council would be 'Ansford & Castle Cary Parish Council' meaning the station, currently in Ansford, would be in the same parish as the town.

All the usual stakeholder and parishioner consultations over the next 18 months before Somerset Council decide yes or no.

Last year we saw the new enlarged Bridport emerge from The merger of most of the existing parishes of Allington, Bothenhampton & Walditch, Bradpole and Bridport, including West Bay. It seems eminently sensible. The enlarged parish has cive wards which equate to the old parishes.

I have watched this development with interest, particularly given I have historical connections to the area (Burton Bradstock and West Bay in particular) Oh how I wish the same might happen someday in Melksham, which is being terribly held back by a town council that lacks any vision, foresight or moral integrity whatsoever; whereas the parish that surrounds the town is widely respected for its fiscal and people management and can-do attitude. If only there could be a merger! One council for Melksham! Sadly however I won't live to see it, and I don't suppose my children will either.

There is logic in linking areas that have connections as they get more connected as the towns spread, and also because we have become more mobile in our day to day lives.   These days, people will head from Bowerhill or Beanacre into Melksham for the takeaways, charity shops, gyms, library, swimming pool, council offices, hair dressers and nail salons where they would have had those facilities in their village area in the past.   There is also logic on the planning and transport side with us working together such as we have done in getting the joint neighbourhood plan adopted, and in having a transport strategy which has been written, submitted to both and adopted by the surrounding parish (Melksham Without)

I would point out that Phil is expressing his view of Melksham Town Council here which is one I have heard before, but is not universally shared.  The difference might be partly explained by the fact that Without have had the same clerk at the helm for many years, where we in the town have had John, Steve, Linda, Heather, Tracy and now have Hayley.  However good they are, it hasn't helped a continuity of vision, and by a large town council being seen as a stepping stone and experience generator for unpaid councillors within to move on to higher remunerated tiers.

Also there is another Castlecary in Scotland though the Scottish place is written as one word Castlecary. whereas the English place is written as two words Castle Cary.
I wonder if anyone has ever gone to the wrong one ?

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards, luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

Yes, Broadgage, stories used to abound of misunderstanding. As they did on the Saturday that Manchester United were drawn away to Gillingham in the cup, and a coach load of supporters arrived in Dorset at 2pm.
Born in 1945, we lived in Cary (Upper Cary) for a couple of years, then 5 years in South Cary. When we then. moved, My Dad, (the doctor) was asked if we were staying local. "Oh no" he said, "we are moving to Ansford".
Happy Days.

Somerset Council to launch new bus service to Castle Cary station

[Image from here is not available to guests]
The new 667X bus service will run throughout the week, including Sundays

A council has set a date for when a new bus service to a train station will start running.

Somerset Council will launch the 667X bus service, linking Glastonbury and Street with Castle Cary railway station, in June 2026.

It is due to run throughout the week, including Sundays, alongside the 667 service, which already runs from Street to Castle Cary station.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council's lead member for transport and waste services, said: "Hopefully it will prove popular, as it gives people the choice to leave their car at home and save money."

The 667X will connect specifically with trains to and from London, Exeter, Plymouth, Paignton, Salisbury, Weymouth and Gloucester, the council has said.

Wilkins said: "We are delighted to be able to provide this trial service linking Glastonbury and Street to train services at Castle Cary. The aim is to ensure the route is sustainable in the long term and well used, so we need people to make the most of it. We have taken care to tailor the timings so the buses link up with the trains."

The council is also planning to offer a service from Somerton and Langport to link with trains at peak times.

During off-peak hours, passengers will be able to book the Somerton Slinky to connect with the 667X at Keinton Mandeville for travel to and from Castle Cary station.
