You're misreading the map - it just means that the line is blocked for at least one day in the period of the map & you have to read the key to discover which days.
Yes - I know that now and apologised for my misreading in my previous message

Aside for other readers - I note that the following week both the South and the North Cotswold are closed for engineering works.
You need to fully check that statement, Graham - the North Cots is only closed as per the thread's subject line - just one week.
Week of 23rd August ...

As shown on the map, both north and south cotswold have all day closures the following week. But reading the detail (and I hadn't done so before) on different days so at least one is open every daytime. I was confused by map - sorry.

I would think that from Didcot, that a route via Kemble would be a valid one to University (Birmingham). If there isn't a a closure easement in place (which would surprise me), then all she would be liable for is the difference between the two (route) fares - if there is, indeed, any.
I would welcome other thoughts.

My daughter is travelling from Didcot Parkway to University tomorrow and has a ticket that is 'via Evesham'.
Normally this would involve a GWR service direct to Worcestershire Parkway and then a Cross Country service to University.
Given the closure of this route tomorrow can she travel Didcot to Gloucester and then Gloucester to University rather than use the rail replacement bus between Moreton in The Marsh and Worcestershire Parkway?

In theory probably not - in practise I don't imagine there would be an issue.

Seems SWR have the same issues as GWR - all the Lymington shuttles have now been reinstated.
If only GWR would put a minibus on to cover their route though...
Yes - absolutely. Saying "This train may be replaced by road transport" is a darned sight more reliable and passenger-centric than saying "This train will be cancelled".

ouch!

Are Highways England offering "delay / repay" or the equivalent to those held up by more than 15/60/60/120 minutes from the journey planners?

Couple stranded on Lincolnshire canal as heat closes railway bridge: August 2025 In "The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom" [364315/30586/51] Posted by Chris from Nailsea at 17:24, 17th August 2025 | ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
From the BBC:

Michael Smith and Linda Leetham have been stuck in Keadby Lock since Tuesday
A couple are stuck on their narrowboat in a Lincolnshire lock after high temperatures forced engineers to close a bridge.
Michael Smith, 64, and Linda Leetham, 61, from Thorne, South Yorkshire, arrived at Stainforth and Keadby Canal on Tuesday but found the Vazon Sliding Railway Bridge in Keadby, near Scunthorpe, had been closed.
A Network Rail spokesperson apologised for the disruption, adding the bridge was "operating with temperature restrictions following recent equipment issues". The spokesperson added it would reopen once temperatures dropped to 16C (60F) or below.
Mr Smith and his partner were travelling on their 67ft (20m) narrowboat up the River Trent from Chesterfield Canal to their moorings in Thorne when they came to a halt. "We can get off the boat, we can walk down to Keadby, there's a couple of little shops. So we're alright for the basics like bread and milk," said Mr Smith.

The Keadby bridge is the only one of its kind in the UK, according to Network Rail
In February last year, work was finished to strengthen the walls and replace the rails and track. But in August that year, it had to close again after a fault was found.
The Network Rail spokesperson said: "While the structural abutment works completed in 2024 have prevented further settlement and reduced vibration, the bridge continues to face challenges with its mechanical equipment and temperature sensitivity. The more recent works have focused on addressing issues with the rolling wheels and removing temporary rolling plates."

The original sliding bridge dates to the 1860s but was adapted in 1925
Mr Smith said he usually avoids the bridge due to its frequent problems but was left with no choice as most Pennine canals were closed due to low water. "We've now moved on [the boat] and our travel options are getting smaller literally by the week," he said. "The canal users are suffering more than anybody else."
A spokesperson for the Canals and Rivers Trust said they have had to close some locks to boats due to the "effects of the drought and prolonged dry weather".
"We need sustained rain to top up the reservoirs that feed the canals. But, as soon as water levels allow, we'll get them back open for boating. We know how frustrating navigation restrictions are and we're grateful to boaters for their support," the spokesperson added.

The M5 Northbound over the Avonmouth Bridge is experiencing severe delays due to faulty bridge joint. Three of the four lanes northbound are closed. Tailbacks are currently stretching 14 miles back to J21 Weston-super-Mare. Traffic is slow moving as far back as J23 Dunball, Bridgwater. Traffic is taking over three hours to pass the affected area.
A temporary fix was made earlier today, but Highways England say a permanent fix is "quickly needed". The three lanes are likely to remain closed for the rest of the day.
The warm weather is affecting the speed at which the repairs can be made with materials taking longer to cure.

Just happened to notice that as I write there are 24 cancellations on GWR and 25 on SWR. Over there they have six successive round trips on the Lymington Branch not running leaving a three hour gap.
A minibus has been arranged to cover the route. It is advertised under “Line updates” rather than the individual cancellations.

I am afraid I could not go due to other commitments but this is a short summary of the talk that I was given
Nigel Ewens outlined a scheme for a narrow guage line from M Newton to W Bay via Gore Cross and the bus station. There was a 300m tunnel involved, and stations at Loders, Powerstock and Toller. He identified the problems of getting the project in, but was optimist about solutions. I saw no indications of predicted traffic/income flows, but he ran out of time sadly. There was some talk of importing 6 steam engines from retirement in Sri Lanka
The Bridport Museum ran a series of seven talks in celebration of Rail 200. I gave two of these, one on the early days of the railway and the second on Bridport Harbour/West Bay and the Railway

Yup... the throat... and the strepsils orange and vitamin 'c' thing. The specific mechanism is that the vitamin 'C' supplies a somewhat low pH environment for the particular antibacterial agent they contain, said environment with those ingredients causes the Covid virus to form clumps, which the body's immune system, which may have been looking past the infection, regards as highly suspicious, so it puts the virus on the "Undesirable" list and takes action against it.
My experience of it, laid low by Covid back in '21... it, plus the throat it gave me, then took me out of circulation for days on end. The painful throat meant that I didn't feel like swallowing the copious saliva I was producing, which turns out to be a good thing against the case that the stomach's acid bath is incapable of eliminating the virus.
An O₂ sats meter was useful, but the sore throat continued to be a stopper and wasn't relenting.
Eventually, reading up on the ingredients and looking out an over-the-counter medicine that contained them, took one and literally 10 minutes later the throat pain was 95% abated, not because it had been anaesthetised away but because some mechanism had been stopped in its tracks. Having vanished, it stayed vanished for some time, and then got the same treatment every time it threatened to return.
Anyway, hope you're both soon feeling a lot better.

"Liked" that by accident, 'cos, sorry to see this. If either of you get the terrible sore throat, specifically Strepsils orange with vitamin 'C'. They're not an antiviral so, they shouldn't be expected to help with this, but there's science behind their effectiveness regarding the sore throat symptom.

Lisa is far worse throat wise that I am ... I am feeling dopey, thick, weird, frustrated and unable to settle to anything - so nothing unusual there. Seriously keeping an eye on her. We have cancelled / postponed a whole number of things we were looking at doing (re)starting over the next couple of weeks.
We have a variety of sweet and lozenges and powders that are primarily for Lisa, and a supermarket delivery scheduled for tomorrow, and as it gets into a cool evening I will probably go out for a breath of fresh air.
I know I am posting in public here - so no secrets (and off topic) - but yet to friends. To say I feel perhaps happier than I have in a long while that I have far less tense / urgent coming up that has deadlines or expectations on me than I have had in a long while. There is temptation to inform and explain many of the local issues, and indeed to suggest solutions and ways forward but I'm much more biting my tongue and moving past to other more specific stuff. My finger remains on the pulse of the Coffee Shop servers - fascinating analysis this morning of how the AI bots are crawling us, and how we can guide / instruct / demand / force their habits. Lots of false signups but new valid ones have zeroed and that's of concern, perhaps, for the future.

Tens of passengers were stranded high on a Singapore railway track after their train suffered a power fault......
Err, no - this was not a train power fault but rather a significant power supply failure which took out long sections of both the East-West & North-South lines seemingly centred around the Jurong East junction.
And was it beyond the research capabilities of the journalist(s) involved to note that this problem involved the Singapore MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) system not just 'the railway'.
