If the outlaws don't mind a bit of complication, travelling from Cardiff to London can be made cheaper by splitting fares at Swindon.
Instead of Off-Peak Return at ^74, try:
Cardiff-Swindon Off-Peak Day Rtn @ ^16.60 (valid from 9.15 on weekdays, so not quite as early as the ^74 fare)
Swindon-Padd Off-Peak Rtn @ ^48 - total ^64.60.
Even cheaper if travelling late enough to use a Super Off-Peak from Swindon (^39.80 - total ^56.40), but I would guess that you need (not Super) Off-Peak times as you've quoted the ^74 fare.
Further savings are possible with an additional split at Didcot, but not all trains stop there so more planning is needed.
Re-reading, there's not need to pay for the Cardiff-Newport part of the London journey, as it's covered by the Leominster-Cardiff ticket; you only need to pay for the Newport-London journey. A Newport-Swindon Off-Peak Day Return is ^14.40. If splitting fares at Swindon is too much hassle, an Off-Peak return NWP-PAD is ^68. Super Off-Peak even cheaper but much more restricted times on weekdays.

Your travelling short option on the return from London is absolutely fine.

Hi All,
One of the Outlaws has decided to come and stay a night before going to London.
They will be travelling from Leominster to Cardiff staying then going to London for the day before returning to Leominster.
Can I suggest to them that they buy a period return from Leo to Cardiff ^28.30, then a Day return from Cardiff to London ^74.00 changing at Newport on the return part and then using the Card to Leominster part of the return.
Have checked for rovers etc think this is the best option is it okay I know it is slightly travelling short etc
Thanks
Basset
