Rather sadly, local sentiment seems to have drifted to "here we go again" and "but where would the car park go?" rather than "wouldn't it be great for Corsham to have a station" or (more to the point) "wouldn't it be good to have trains calling in Corsham".  I can understand the cynicism as the idea of re-opening Corsham Station has been around for a long time.

More practically, can the line cope with additional stops, or is it going to require significant resignalling/reopened platforms at Chippenham to allow fast services to pass the slow?

Precisely. There is also the issue that various groups are arguing for two different things

A body of tbought locally is that they want a local station effectively just serving the town, a kind of Parson Street or Weston Milton if you like.

Another body of thought (including those who are most likely to get the ears of the powers-that-be) see it as a park and ride hub, to overcome the problem of the existing one (Chippenham) having the station in the centre of town, and thereby adding to local congestion.

If either group win hrough, the other half of the campaigners are going to be disappointed. But even if the "local station" featernity win through, there is not enough room in the old cramped site to provide a car park, and that hasn't been helped by new housing dxevelopment over the years, so any new Crsham station is unlikely to be on the old site.

Because of the proximity of Box tunnel, this realistically means somewhere to the east of the town. Then you get into the arguments of "How much further east?" "Souldn't we put it at Thingley to serve the Melksham route as well" and "There's no point in putting it as close to Chippenham as that"

Alternatively you might be able to provide a large enough car park at the old Box station site, but then Corsham doesn't get its station and Box doesn't really get one either as it is so far away from the main village.

My crystal ball suggests there will be stalematr for years resulting in nothing getting done except more meetings...
