"That was the age of the train" says a picture caption showing an HST (High Speed Train (Inter City class 43 125 units)) on the last day of full length high speed operation in punclic service yesterday. They have been with us for 40 years and saved the railway.

What are the next 40 years going to be "the age of" ??

The age of the car and the airline, regrettably.

Just today HMG have announced that they are considering watering down previously announced environmental measures.
The ban on new registrations of fossil fuelled cars and light vans is expected to be postponed by perhaps 5 years, and the ban on new gas boilers to become a restriction on numbers rather than a ban.
No new taxes on or restrictions on air travel.

No mention of railways, either electrification or more use of railways as presently existing.
No mention of trolley buses or battery buses. No mention of trams.

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards,luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

Cancellations to services between Westbury and Swindon
Due to more trains than usual needing repairs at the same time between Westbury and Swindon fewer trains are able to run on the line towards Westbury.

Yesterday - the final run by a full length HST (High Speed Train (Inter City class 43 125 units)) with passengers before it was withdrawn from service.
Today - not enough working trains to run the timetable.



Yeah, I know there's a bit of cascading involved here!

Today it was formally announced that most of the HS2 (The next High Speed line(s)) project is cancelled, just London to Birmingham going ahead.
Among the alternative spending plans announced were a number of motorway improvements.
New and improved roads only generate more traffic.
Climate emergency ? What emergency ? A number of other environmental measures have been postponed.
