Sorry I meant to post this before but have been busy working and generally working later than usual due to arriving at work late (thanks to the lovely trains)...I think the comments commuters have added after the story itself also show how bad it is currently..

Weren't the 180s suppose to be here for the Cotswold line thus releasing Turbos for the TV (Thames Valley, or TeleVision, depending on context) lines. Haven't seen one go by the house yet.

The announcement was 'by May 2012' - three of the five units were still in use with Northern last week, and the other two aren't available to FGW (First Great Western) either...

180's are off to be made pretty before we will see them on a passenger service.

Does "made pretty" mean "reseated like the cattle truck HSTs (High Speed Train (Inter City class 43 125 units))"?

Probably ! tables and leg room are very last year you know !
Customers much prefer high density bus seats, surveys show this*.

* the correct question must be asked in a survey in order to achieve the desired result. Ask people on crowded services "would you like more seats ?" very few are going to answer "no" therefore the survey can be qouted as showing that customers prefer the high density "improved" trains.

The result would be rather different if the question was asked "would you like reduced space per passenger and fewer tables"

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards, luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.
