Not clear if sand blowing onto the track and filling up the flangeways is what caused the derailment, but I can't imagine that this is the first time that problem has ever been experienced in Blackpool.

My one and only experience of a derailment (except as a kid with my Hornby OO▸ ((Double O) - model railway, 4mm to 1 foot scale)) was on the Blackpool Tramway some years ago. That was caused by trailing spring points blocked by a half-brick, probably placed deliberately.

This does seem to be a rather amateurish way of dealing with the problem:

William Huskisson MP▸ (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

My understanding is that blown sand can act as an insulator between the tram and the rails. Do not get on or off a tram in these circumstances!
