Why does this station (code DPT) have the county in brackets on NRE▸ (National Rail Enquiries) & FGW▸ (First Great Western) journey planner? The other communities with this name are in Australia & New Zealand ( and neither has a railway station)!

Yes, there is some potential for confusion there, as the three-letter code for Davenport is DVN.  Roll Eyes

William Huskisson MP▸ (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

The Australian one is actually on the island of Tasmania. It doesn't have a railway station (there is very little rail in Tas'), but it does have an airport, mainly handling regional flights from the Australian mainland. It's three-letter IATA code is DPO.

A bit of a pain, if you fly to DPO but are told upon arrival that your luggage has, most unfortunately, been sent to DPT.  Tongue

Ah, but the airport check-in staff, having keyed in DPT by mistake, would have bought up the FGW▸ (First Great Western) page which shows it's unstaffed.  Grin

Tickets to Swindon always show "Swindon (Wilts)": there aren't any other Swindons in the country as far as I'm aware, but it's presumably to avoid confusion with Swinton (Manchester) and Swinton (S Yorks).

There's Newport ((S. Wales) or occasionally (Gwent) depending on the system) to avoid confusion with Newport (Essex).

Ashford (Surrey) to avoid confusion with Ashford Intl.

Ashurst Kent and Ashurst N Forest.

Bramley (Hants) and Bramley W Yorks.

Brampton Cumbria and Brampton Suffolk.

That's just the As and Bs. Loads more where either the same name or similar spelling could lead to confusion if there wasn't an addition to the place name.

There may be others - I've trained at the first and driven a narrow boat through the second!

Very confusing place Ashford (Surrey); it used to be part of Middlesex and in in 1990 (after the change) the football team officially changed its name to Ashford Town (Middx).... to avoid being mistaken for Ashford in Kent.

On that exact subject, I nearly made a very embarrassing mistake at Twickenham station the first time I ended up on crowd control duties after a rugby match...suffice it to say that all the customer needed to do was hop on a local train and go a couple of stops, not travel via St Pancras and HS1▸ (High Speed line 1 - St Pancras to Channel Tunnel) as I suggested  Embarrassed

Back on an international flavour, I once was buying a ticket to Evian and very nearly ended up going to Avignon ( as in 'sur le pont...'). Obviously the cockney french dialect was unfamiliar!  Grin
