But what is scary about the current situation is that presumably there's an internal industry mechanism for XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise)) to apply to take over all the relevant flows from FGW (First Great Western)

Yep there is - done on pax (passengers) flow using each TOC (Train Operating Company)....winner is TOC carrying most pax

I don't believe that.

I travel regularly from Worcester to the North West and I've looked at the fares on offer (in the interests of ticket splitting).

Worcester - Crewe (SOR ^59.30, no First Class fares) is set by London Midland. Understandable given that they operate two trains per hour.

Worcester - Preston (SOR ^104.00, FOR ^194.00) is set by Virgin West Coast. Understandable given that they operate one train per hour.

Worcester - Warrington Bank Quay (SOR ^84.00, FOR ^185.00) and Wigan (SOR ^96.00, FOR ^210.00) are both set by CrossCountry. To travel with XC I'd have to change in Manchester, adding 1:15 to a 2:15 journey.

As it says in the exam papers, "discuss".  Smiley

Oh, and the cheapest fare involves five separate tickets, for Worcester - Birmingham - Wolverhampton - Crewe - Wigan - Preston, saving just under 30%.

To complete the original story, having been asked to send a pdf of the tickets through to CC, they admitted that I had been overcharged, and have sent me a voucher for ^1.60.  The response, whilst apologetic, didn't really address the point I was trying to make, which was how come their TM (Train Manager, or Ticket Machine, or Temple Meads (Bristol), depending on context)'s machine was set to show an incorrect price, so I don't get the impression that anything will be done to stop it happening again, and thus netting CC a nice little profit to the embarrassment of some of its customers.
