Hello to everyone in FGW (First Great Western) land "Dark Star" calling in.

I reckon you could call me a career railwayman as steam (it was no longer king but) was still running on BR (British Rail(ways)) when my railway career began.
I had many jobs from shunting to signal boxes, worked at many stations, depots and freight yards.
My best day was hitching a footplate ride on an ex LMS (London Midland Scottish - 1923 to 1948) Black 5, something magical about steam at 70mph and more running at sunset into a cold frosty night.
As retirement calls me to "play" trains on a heritage railway, I will say I was very sad when First won the Greater Western franchise, my view was (and still is) anyone but First.

Oh well I don't have to worry about the big railway anymore, well not for much longer, I'm not saying when I retire(d) as I do wish to stay a bit hidden.
I've read this forum for many years, very sorry it took so long to say Hi.

Note: Whilst I say "play" trains on a heritage line, it is as my pleasure, not for gain (as in Pounds shillings and pence)
as a train is just as dangerous at 1.25 mph as at 125mph, and Heritage lines need to be treated  with as much respect as the main line.      DS

Hi, DS.  Hope you get as much interest as I do out of the coffee shop and I suspect you'll be one of the people educating the likes of me.  Smiley

And a warm welcome from me too, Dark Star. Not only am I a Grateful Dead fan but I also read (and briefly wrote for) a music magazine named Dark Star after their song, so whilst I don't have a career on the railways behind me I do at least have some 40 years worth of association with your user name on here!
