Here's an item I missed last month in the Wokingham Times.
 
It's another example of politicians and/or journalists talking nonsense, of course, in particular this bit:

Councillor David Lee, leader of the council, said: ^It would make quite a difference. There is a portion of that site which is in effect open ground for the potential of a railway halt.

^We don^t know how far it is off, but if the government or Network Rail decide to electrify the line it could be much closer to reality.^

This is a bit scary, too:

Cllr Sleight believes the halt could cost ^50 million if it was designed for 12 carriages.

And of course (as was pointed out in several comments online) every extra station slows down the trains - while:

Cllr Lee believes the majority of passengers would like to see faster trips to London and more trains at rush hour as a priority.

So what happened when Airtrack was offering more trains, to more places, and faster? The council objected to it. Not a case of "we welcome this improved service, which is inline with council policy, but will need to find extra funding to replace the level crossing(s)", just a flat refusal.
