A householder in Shirehampton was woken to the noise of a hot air balloon - taking off close to his house this morning.

Martin Sims, who lives in Nibley Road, took pictures of the balloon, which he believes was launched from the City and Port of Bristol Sports Club field near his house.

^I was woken up to the loud noise of the burners,^ he said. ^I looked out of my window and saw the balloon going up right near the trees at the back of my garden."

The Bristol Post understands that this balloon was not launched as part of the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, which starts today at 12 noon.

William Huskisson MP▸ (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

Didn't see this one. Although I approve of the advertising. Even though I'm not partaking at the moment.

Also, I've broken my jinx. Went to Ashton Court late afternoon yesterday (Friday) and saw a mass ascent. Every time I'd gone in the past, since moving to Bristol, weather conditions weren't suitable for ballooning. With the years when I didn't go being perfect ballooning weather.

A few months ago I was at the computer at home, heard a rushing noise and looked out of the window to see a balloon only a few metres away, obviously in some kind of difficulty. Fortunately it managed to stay up long enough to cross the road and land safely in the field opposite.

In balloon circles, that is known as a "landing".

That sounds more like the official definition of a crash. The terms are interchangeable.
